GAO news from FierceGovernmentIT

The Government Accountability Office is located in the legislative branch of the federal government and is responsible for auditing, investigating, and otherwise evaluating the actions and processes of the government as a whole. Most importantly, the GAO investigates government spending of taxpayer dollars. The head of the GAO is called the Comptroller General of the United States and is appointed by the President to a 15-year term. The GAO begins investigations most commonly at the request of congressional committees or subcommittees. It also rules on protests filed by would-be federal contractors who believe agencies erred in administering the acquisition process.
