Will cybersecurity legislation help you?

There's no question that Congress is up to speed about cybersecurity threats. There have been five bills introduced this year that mention cybersecurity, according to Federal News Radio. The latest, introduced Wednesday by Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE), looks to protecting public and private sector networks from attack.

It's a subject that CIOs and federal IT executives have front-and-center in their sights these days as the reports about hack attacks and successes against federal government networks keep increasing. Carper, the chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services, and International Security, is sponsoring a bill to create an office at the White House to coordinate cybersecurity across government.

The real question here is whether there is too much talk about where the office should be located, and too little about getting down to business and throwing a shield across government against cyberattacks. Until that is done, no amount of bureaucracy will help prevent cyberattacks. And the question for you right now is: What kind of help do you really need to fortify your network?
