White House names names online
In the latest example of Obama transparency, the White House has changed the official policy that goes back decades that keeps the names of people visiting the president a secret. The new rule? The White House is posting, online, the names of visitors from the previous 90 to 120 days.
"For the first time in history, records of White House visitors will be made available on an ongoing basis," President Obama said in a statement. "We will achieve our goal of making this administration the most open and transparent administration in history not only by opening the doors of the White House to more Americans, but by shining a light on the business conducted inside."
Not every name will be revealed, as the names of people being considered for high-level appointments such as Supreme Court justices will be withheld. Others will be exempt from the list if their disclosure poses a national security risk.
While nothing has been discussed about revealing visitors to other agencies, there is definitely a question of whether visitor lists from the Energy Department, the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department and the Pentagon should be publicly disclosed, as well. And does that mean an agency should be revealing the name of a contractor visiting the CIO looking for business or an interagency meeting to figure out a better IT policy?
