White House eyes control of cybersecurity
The disarray and lack of coordination in the federal government's approach to cybersecurity oversight may lead the Obama administration to take away control of operations from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
While the administration is still undergoing a 60-day review and seeking to develop a new strategy, Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI) told reporters last week that operations may well end up inside the White House. Langevin said this effort likely will be run from within the National Security Council, adding it is unclear whether there will be a separate cybersecurity office.
There has been a growing consensus among experts inside and outside the government that much more has to be done to protect the government's IT assets and critical infrastructure from attacks. There is also a major fight for control in this area, with the National Security Agency, DHS and the military all vying for expanded powers.
