The watchdog over stimulus money

Someone has to be in charge of policing the spending of $787 billion stimulus package, and that person is Earl E. Devaney, the inspector general for the Interior Department. He's been given this massive new job by the Obama administration.

Devaney described his new post in an interview with The New York Times. "It's sort of the Super Bowl of oversight," said Devaney, who has $84 million to run his office through September 2011, out of some $350 million for oversight.

He knows how tough this job will be. Billions of dollars will be allocated swiftly to jump-start the economy, and it is Delaney's job to make sure the money heads to the right place and is spent properly.

He points to the new website, recovery.gov, where the stimulus money can be tracked.

"The good, the bad and the ugly will all be on that website," he said.
