SPOTLIGHT: Virtual border fence on its way up
It's been ridiculed and attacked, canceled and renewed. But now the first piece of an electronic border fence is being built south of Tuscon, AZ, to keep out illegal immigrants and prevent drug smuggling. Mark Borkowski, executive director of the Secure Border Initiative within the Customs and Border Protection department at the Department of Homeland Security, said this time around, the "technology has been changed, tested and retested" and now "does work." But it remains a big question whether the entire $6.7 billion project along the southwest U.S. border will actually work. And it will be interesting to see if it does a better job than computer terminals at land borders, airports and seaports. Article
