Turning the page on the cybersecurity review

The Obama administration's two-month review of the nation's cybersecurity policy is just about over, and the results will have a major impact on IT policy for every federal agency. While little is known about the direction the review has taken, it will yield a high-level strategic plan for securing government computer operations across the board.

Some agencies will not have much to do, since they already are in top-form for protecting their systems and data. But other agencies, where there have been plenty of breaches, may be facing the huge task of correcting their vulnerabilities and tightening their security webs.

The review is being led by Melissa Hathaway, acting senior director for cyberspace for the National Security and Homeland Security councils. Her efforts have covered a lot of territory, including an inventory of policy directives, executive orders and strategies.

The outcome of this exhaustive study may be just the beginning of an integrated policy. It also may be the road map for agencies to do a better job in an area that has been lacking.
