Tracking a green government

Earth Day was Wednesday, and there's no better time for the federal government to consider how agencies will meet environmental and energy targets.

"We are looking at new and better ways to track federal agencies' greenhouse gas emissions, electronic stewardship efforts, federal fleet requirements and green procurement implementation," an OMB officer told Federal Times.

Without a doubt, that means technology will be deployed to keep track of what's going on at every agency and issue warnings when they are failing to meet targets. And there are plenty of metrics already on the books that agencies must meet.

For example, agencies are required to cut fuel consumption by 2 percent annually, and increase consumption of alternative fuels by 10 percent each year. The administration is exploring how to make all of this information transparent and available online, too, according to OMB.
