Survey: Feds avoid virtualization

Federal agencies have been ignoring virtualization, although IT managers know it's a good idea, according to a new survey by CDW Government Inc.

The reason: lack of money. The IT managers said the funding problem is the biggest obstacle for the federal government to move forward on virtualization.

The survey found that nearly 80 percent of the 377 federal IT managers responding said their agencies have begun implementing some form of virtualization. Only 50 percent said the implementation had been successful.

Other findings included:

> More than 50 percent of federal agencies are utilizing storage virtualization.

> Nearly 50 percent of federal agencies have implemented client virtualization.

> 59 percent of federal agencies have implemented server virtualization.
