Steve Cooper to become the FAA's CIO?

The summer rumor mill is grinding away, and this time it centers on Steve Copper, the first chief information officer at the Department of Homeland Security from 2003 to 2005.

Allan Holmes, of nextgov.com, reports this week that the federal information technology industry is talking about the rumored appointment of Cooper as the chief information officer at the Federal Aviation Administration. The job is open, and Cooper is definitely qualified. After leaving DHS, he was the CIO at the Red Cross, afterward starting his own consulting business.

It's hard to read the tea leaves right now, but we wouldn't be surprised if this one is true.

Dave Bowen remains as the FAA CIO; Steve Cooper will be the CIO of the Air Traffic Organization within the FAA, which is a critical position since the ATO is the largest line of business within the FAA
