When Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with State Department employees recently, a question arose whether the staff could use the Firefox Web browser. One of the employees cited that it's "a much safer program" because it's been "approved for the entire intelligence community."

While Clinton, who has been preoccupied with helping to shape policies toward Iran, China and Russia among other things, could not give an answer, Under Secretary Patrick Kennedy claimed that Firefox could not be used for now because it was "an expense question."

When it was pointed out that Firefox is free, Kennedy explained that it was matter of resources needed to manage multiple systems worldwide, including load patches and engaging in other network activity.

So for the moment, Internet Explorer rules at State, but Firefox may be gaining ground.
