Hillary Clinton's State Department is taking on a new look, at least when it comes to use of technology and the web. You might call it e-diplomacy--a way to spread the word and promote the U.S. through new media.

Since taking over as Secretary of State, the former First Lady has increased the digital presence at Foggy Bottom with an upgraded department website--www.state.gov--a new blog--blogs.state.gov--and the use of Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube to keep track of her travels and moves about town. She has an "ask-the-secretary" column where questions can can be asked and answered, as well.

"New media is critical in this new era of diplomacy, where smart power and expanded dialogues are essential to achieving our foreign policy goals," said Cheryl Mills, Clinton's chief of staff.
