SSA's conservative approach to the datacenter
These days, the dominant buzz word is innovation, but the Social Security Administration admits it's willing to stick with "tried and true" technology when it comes to the data center. "SSA tends to be very conservative," said Lester Diamond, SSA associate CIO, at INPUT's MarketView 2010 Conference on April 8. The agency used to joke that it had the biggest cloud around: It's four mainframes. Now, the agency is building a new data center in Maryland and hopes to have all data migrated to the facility by 2015. While none of SSA's strategies are bleeding edge, Diamond says the agency's initial focus will be virtualization. "We're developing a strategy to virtualize everything we can."
