Spotlight: OPM clarifies operating status language

The Office of Personnel Management has released new language to clarify the various dismissal and closure status of federal offices during the winter weather months and future closures. OPM wants office operating statuses to be clear, citing some confusion and related feedback from closures during Hurricane Sandy and last January's ice storm.

The new announcement in the event of a closure will say, "Federal offices are closed – Emergency and telework ready employees must follow their agency's policies." Its new operating status messages also cover six different 'open' operating statuses, an immediate closure and departure status, and a notification if an office has a shelter in place.
