The Commerce Department's Internet Policy Task Force is seeking comments on the "Cybersecurity, Innovation and the Internet Economy" report (.pdf) it published June 8, according to a June 15 notice in the Federal Register (.pdf). The notice includes 45 questions from the Internet Policy Task Force but comments are not limited to the suggested questions. Comments should be emailed to SecurityGreenPaper@nist.gov by 12:00 a.m. August 1. The subject line should read: "Comments on Cybersecurity Green Paper" and will be posted at www.ntia.doc.gov/internetpolicytaskforce.

The proposal is a first step in developing security best practices that can become industry policy standards for companies operating in the "Internet and Information Innovation Sector." Such standards, says the report, will form the basis for voluntary codes of conduct intended for companies that rely on the Internet to do business, but are not part of the critical infrastructure sector, as defined in the White House cybersecurity proposal sent to lawmakers May 12. See the notice (.pdf).
