John Dragoon, the senior vice president and chief marketing officer at technology company Novell, believes that the federal government will be missing the boat if it doesn't begin scrapping some of its outmoded systems and moving toward open-source software. Writing in Forbes magazine, he argues that the government could save billions of dollars while meeting the need for data centers, database applications and so much more. This approach, he argues, will foster innovation, offer a wide variety of choices, eliminate the always dicey procurement process, and open up a window for IT leaders in government to take part in a community development process. There are some serious issues to address including security, but Dragoon's argument is food for thought. Article
