Shhh ... GSA keeps dot-gov domains under wraps

You may want a list of dot-gov domains, but forget it. The General Services Administration is keeping mum about that information. And the GSA was explicit when asked for the information under the Freedom of Information Act.

The GSA argued that "release of the requested sensitive but unclassified information presents a security risk to the top level Internet domain enterprise." That position is a complete contrast to President Obama's declaration of "an unprecedented level of openness in government."

The domain names are just growing and growing. In January, the GSA said there were nearly 5,000 dot-gov domains, with growth occurring at a 10 percent clip per year. Still, despite the promises of their boss, the GSA has not changed its position. It will be interesting to see how this issue unfolds in the myriad of complexities concerning Obama's pledge of transparency.
