Senate appropriators fully fund IRS modernization

The Senate Appropriations Committee voted July 27 to fully fund the Internal Revenue Service's fiscal 2011 request for its ongoing business system modernization effort. The IRS request of $386.9 million is $123 million more the fiscal 2010 enacted amount.

In the report accompanying their markup of the tax agency's budget request for the next fiscal year, which starts Oct. 1, Senate appropriators credit the IRS with "steady progress over the past few years." The report directs that $152.1 million be spent on the Customer Account Data Engine 2 and $39.1 million on Modernized e-File. The spending bill still requires a vote by the full Senate and reconciliation with the House markup, which has yet to pass through the House Appropriations Committee.
