The Obama administration turned to Roger Baker, a high-tech expert, to be the next chief information officer at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The White House announced Tuesday that it is nominating Baker for the post. He has extensive public and private sector experience in technology, and the ability to lead the VA through many challenging issues. Baker must be confirmed by the Senate.

Government service is nothing new for Baker, who is widely respected for his ability to deal with some of the toughest technology issues around. He had been the CIO at the Commerce Department from 1998 to 2001, and worked with the Obama campaign last year on the Technology, Media and Telecommunications Group.

But his job won't be easy as he works to bring the various technology pieces in the massive VA system into a centralized system.
