Report: FCC must retool its disaster response
The Federal Communications Commission is ready for some emergencies such as cyberattacks and pandemic flu, but needs to do more to guard against disasters, a new report says.
"Based on this comprehensive review, I would say that we are ready for emergencies that we can anticipate and that we are reasonably prepared for those which cannot be anticipated," said retired Rear Admiral Jamie Barnett, chief of the FCC's Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau.
The report, prepared by the FCC, recommended revamping the the Commission's public safety bureau website to make it more accessible, provide better training for IT systems used for incident management and establish a virtual private network (VPN) for in-house staff to work remotely in the event of a flu pandemic.
