President Obama gets his own EMR

President Obama is a huge supporter of electronic medical records because it cuts costs and delivers better health care. His economic stimulus plan includes billions of dollars to bring the American health system into the digital age. But surprisingly, Obama was not part of any EMR system until recently.

That's quickly changing. The Military Health System is setting up a version of its electronic health record system for use in the White House, MHS chief information officer Charles Campbell said.

Campbell made his remarks at the Health Information and Management Systems Society's annual conference held in Atlanta this week, according to an article by Paul McCloskey in govhealthit.com. The system was set up two months ago, he said. It's based on AHLTA Theater, DoD's electronic health records system designed for rugged uses in war zones.

The White House EMR would be used in the residence's clinic, in Camp David, as well as on Air Force One and Marine One, the president's airplane and helicopter, Campbell said.

It's one good move, we say.
