Outsourced intel jobs move back to government
The world of the outside contractor handling intelligence community IT jobs and other work is about to change. The government is accelerating efforts to transfer thousands of contractor-performed jobs to federal employees.
To do that, intelligence officers are asking Congress to lift the caps on staffing at the government's 16 intelligence agencies, to end its constant leaning on contractors. It would be a sea of change in an environment that has gotten used to outsourcing essential intel work.
The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence took the first step to making this happen when it passed a 2010 intelligence authorization bill last week that would force agencies to reduce their use of contractors by 5 percent next year. It also would allow intelligence agencies to create additional full-time positions, and places no cap on the number of new employees that can be hired.
This also could be a roadmap for non-intel agencies to follow as more and more IT work is returned in-house.
