The official and unofficial Pentagon Facebook sites
The Pentagon has official Facebook sites, and then, of course, there are those sites set up by military families, fans, supporters and possibly interlopers.
Janson Communications, a public relations firm, says it is often difficult to distinguish the Pentagon's official Facebook pages from the countless "clones" that have cropped up. The reason, according to the study released by the firm, is because few of the Defense Department's Facebook sites have any markings indicating they are official military websites.
The release of the report comes as the Pentagon has said it will liberalize its social networking policies, and that it will allow troops serving both at home and abroad access to social networking sites. Pentagon officials have promised a complete policy review and guidance within six months, but the new report shows that there are challenges, including making sure bogus sites do not appear.
Janson recommended that the Defense Department label its official content on the popular social network.
