Even as the number of Department of Navy-issued Blackberries rises, cellular devices are still verboten in classified settings, according to an article in the latest edition of CHIPS, the official DON information technology magazine.

Hackers can easily enough exploit the control channel on cellular devices to turn on the microphone, the authors write.

"The presumptive answer is 'no,'" the article states. But, "if there is a bona fide mission requirement, there may well be a way of getting your BlackBerry into that restricted space--but you have to convince your local security authority and the [designated approving authority] first," it adds.
