The Navy has a number of ambitious and important IT initiatives for fiscal 2010 involving cybersecurity, network architecture, effective use of wireless technology and improved IT management and information sharing.

"We must find ways to enable the innovative use of information management and IT to meet the needs of the warfighter, while continuing to provide secure and reliable networks to defend our cyber investments and information," Navy CIO Robert Carey said in a letter outlining the goals.

One focus will be to ensure better protection for mobile devices. Attention will be given to encrypt stored data, revamp user names and passwords, and reduce the amount of personally identifiable information stored. The Navy also intends to do more comprehensive cybersecurity assessments, and to streamline its security certification and accreditation processes.

To better monitor and control projects, the Navy said it plans to introduce an enterprise-wide portfolio management process, and widen use of standardized performance measurement. Moreover, it intends to consolidate IT management software and eliminate duplicate software and hardware on ships.

The Navy also plans to make use of more Web 2.0 collaboration tools internally and release Web 2.0 guidelines.
