The National Digital Literacy Corps

The Federal Communications Commission is proposing a National Digital Literacy Corps to help Americans get online.

The idea, modeled after other volunteer organizations such as AmeriCorps, is part of a national broadband plan that will be unveiled next week. It will target communities with low numbers of broadband subscribers, including low-income areas, rural areas and tribal lands.

"This is about neighbors helping neighbors get online,"  said Mignon Clyburn, a member of the FCC.

The FCC also wants funds to pay for digital training efforts at local community centers and libraries as the Obama administration directs a big push to expand broadband across the U.S.
