SPOTLIGHT: IT helps government seal borders

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency is getting a big boost from the economic stimulus package--a $980 million appropriation that includes IT funding to help improve control of the borders. Some of that money will go for large X-ray and gamma-scanners to check incoming cargo systems that rely on sophisticated computer systems. The package also will provide funding for other technology including radar, and communications systems to transmit sensory data; new software to integrate that data and display it for border agents; and new system designs. Article
