How Kundra plans to do his job

Federal CIO Vivek Kundra has a laundry list for what he's planning to do to fine tune the government's information technology systems.

At the top of the list is cloud computing. He outlined what he is planning to do in an interview last week with InformationWeek. It won't always be easy, but part of his plan is to introduce new technology across government, rather than drill down, agency-by-agency.

In the interview, he said he wants to deploy cloud computing horizontally across government, not vertically. He's hoping to spend around $33 million in the 2010 budget to initiate this.

He's also intent on creating cross-agency platforms. For example, he wants to get rid of the cumbersome process of dealing with FISMA.

"Today, every agency has to get their own certification and accreditation even if they are using the same set of technologies," Kundra said. "Imagine how much money we could save if we were able to have a central place where you could get certification and inherit those rights."
