GSA begins laying out roadmap for cloud computing vendors

The General Services Administration took the first step this week toward laying out a roadmap for vendors to be cloud service providers. The GSA issued a Request for Quotation for cloud storage, web hosting and virtual machine services. It's the beginning of building an online storefront to be used by federal agencies for ordering cloud computing services.

There are plenty of requirements for vendors. They must secure their services. Trouble tickets and order management must be done via API. Virtual machine services must allow live migration of workloads from one VM to another. And web hosting services require both Windows and Linux options.

This is just the beginning for cloud computing in government. And there will be many more requirements before it truly gets off the ground.
