President Obama named Vivek Kundra as the federal chief information officer at the White House on Thursday, a new position that will direct federal IT investments and spending.

Kundra, who has been a technology policy adviser for Obama and Washington DC's chief technology officer, has long been rumored to be in line for a top tech job in the new administration. But the announcement of his role in this newly created position comes as a surprise to the IT community.

In a statement, Obama said Kundra brings a wealth of experience and is committed to "lowering the cost of government operations."

"As Chief Information Officer, he will play a key role in making sure our government is running in the most, secure, open and efficient way possible," Obama said.
