GAO: FDA needs IT modernization plan
It's not surprising that the Food and Drug Administration just flunked a key test about modernizing its IT systems and infrastructure. The complex agency has been having plenty of problems completing its mission in a timely fashion and approving drugs for consumer use, not to mention issuing warnings about drugs that should not be on the open market.
But in a recent report, the General Accountability Office made it clear that the FDA is not making the grade and needs to step up to the plate quickly.
The report said the agency does not have an architecture plan to guide its modernization efforts. It also said the agency is not strategically managing its IT human capital to determine what skills are, in fact, needed.
The FDA said it's in the middle of developing a plan. Yet the issues here are too important to avoid for much longer.
