Federal data center closures by the numbers
Office of Management and Budget officials released a list of 137 data centers it says will be shuttered by Dec. 31, as part of an announcement on April 27. Thirty-nine of those have been closed already and 89 remain.
According to the plan, 16 agencies will close data centers this year. Fifty-two, or 38 percent, of the data centers on the chopping block belong to the Defense Department. As of April 21, however, DoD had only closed eight of the data centers on the list. The Interior Department plans to close 18 facilities, NASA plans to close 14 and the Agriculture Department plans to close 10.
The identified facilities are geographically dispersed and, according to Federal CIO Vivek Kundra, the closures will eliminate a total of 325,000 square feet of federal data center space.
The highest concentration of data center closures is in the Mid Atlantic. Fifteen data centers in Washington, D.C. are scheduled to close, as well as 14 in Maryland and 13 in Virginia. Locations of DoD data centers were not disclosed in the list released by OMB, however.
