Federal agencies fall short on email security

A group of security companies report that most federal agencies are ignoring security precautions aimed at not only stopping emails from being infected with a virus or being hacked, but also at keeping personal information from being inadvertently stolen.

The Online Trust Alliances said 14 of the 25 agencies it studied failed to authenticate emails or message domain names. The alliance faulted the Homeland Security, Treasury, and Housing and Urban Development departments, as well as the White House and the FBI.

Among those earning passing marks were the General Services Administration, Census Bureau, Veterans Affairs and the Internal Revenue Service.
