A new survey of federal IT executives has found that email is the most likely application to be moved to the clouds in the next few years. Officials surveyed also predicted that cloud computing will play a major in government IT initiatives, but they expressed concerns about security, and want controls in place before jumping too deeply into this arena.

The survey was conducted by MeriTalk, a community website for the government IT, and the Merlin Federal Cloud Initiative.

Only 13 percent of federal IT managers say they now are using cloud computing. While the survey found that the federal IT managers believe email is the most likely function to move to the clouds, nearly half expect they will move procurement and other tools to this platform in the next five years.
