FDIC uses tech to make remote work easier

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. is taking a step forward in making it easier for its roaming audit teams to work in the field. They are plugging into new teleworker technology that provides secure instant access for its teams.

The teams examine and supervise financial institutions for soundness, and managing receiverships. And now they will be able to use this telework technology that provides secure instant access for the teams.

The FDIC will be using two Aruba Networks' FIPS 140-2 solutions, one for small and one for large audit teams. Dave Logan, Aruba's general manager of federal solutions, told Government Computer News the system uses firewalls in the data center that classify traffic by user identify and other metrics.

It's a far more efficient system than the past, when the FDIC used dedicated circuits and private networks to remotely connect workers, a system that could fail or crash unpredictably.

And it's an idea that could also be used by other government agencies that send auditors and other inspectors out into the field to review different federal requirements for such industries as agriculture, transportation and food and drugs.
