EDS, which has been building the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet for the past 10 years, is expected to get an extra year to handle the contract that is set to expire on Sept. 30, 2010.

The Navy said on Tuesday that EDS will get a sole-source contract to run NMCI through 2011 when it is taken over by NGEN, the Next-
Generation Network (NGEN). The value of the single-source contract was not disclosed. The contract in the last 10 years has been worth more than $10 billion.

Under this new arrangement, EDS will continue NMCI services, support the transition to NGEN and give the Navy licenses for the network's operations and infrastructure.

The landscape for the Intranet will be changing. The Navy plans to take back control of much of the network from EDS. Currently, the worldwide network has more than 700,000 users in 3,000 locations.
