E-Verify on the move...slowly

A House subcommittee approved extending the E-Verify program for two years, a move that will make it easier for employers to verify whether workers are eligible for employment.

That was just one of the issues tackled by the House Appropriations Committee's Homeland Security Subcommittee this week as it allocated nearly $43 billion in discretionary funds for the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Computer Week reported on Tuesday.

However, the E-Verify program has many other stops in Congress, including the Senate, before it becomes law. The congressional action comes as the Obama administration stalls E-Verify for a fourth time before it goes into effect.

The program is an online system that allows employers to easily and quickly verify an applicant's legal status in the United States.
