DOJ cancels case management system at behest of OMB
Office of Management and Budget-led reviews of agency information technology projects have resulted in the cancellation of another project, said Federal CIO Vivek Kundra Sept. 20 in an address to the Federal CIO Council.
Specifically, the Justice Department has terminated its Litigation Case Management System. The system, which began development in 2004, would have required another $193 million to complete, twice the original amount estimated, Kundra said. The original schedule called for LCMS full implementation by December 2010.
A March 2009 Justice inspector general report found the system "significantly behind schedule, over budget, and at significant risk of not meeting the department's long-term enterprise requirements for litigation case management."
OMB-led reviews have also resulted in the Interior Department overhauling its Incident Management Analysis and Reporting System, Kundra said. The system will now deliver incremental capabilities every six months, he added.
"We are in the midst of the Information Revolution. In the same way the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions fundamentally and permanently transformed society, so too is the Information Revolution reshaping the world today," Kundra told the federal CIOs. "Our actions to date are the initial steps in making the Federal government work better for the American people," he added.
