The Department of Homeland Security is definitely ‘with it.' Not content to issue information on paper or online, it has launched its new YouTube channel to enhance its "web presence, increase transparency and provide accurate, up-to-date information to the public."

"Social media plays an increasingly large role in our engagement with the public, especially in the event of an incident or disaster," DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said. "These new tools will facilitate an open dialogue about the department's security efforts across the nation and around the world."

Just think radio. In the past, radio was intended to alert people to danger--man made or natural. Today, social media is taking its place. And it's a good thing that DHS recognizes that new kinds of communications are essential to get the word out about its mission.
