CTO Chopra has a long list for embracing 2.0
Aneesh Chopra, the nation's first chief technology officer, has a long list of "must-do" projects to put the government on the path to universal 2.0. He sat down in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal blog, explaining how he wants to push government to embrace blogs, technology, wikis and social networking.
"It's a safe assumption that the federal government will be more likely to adopt Web 2.0 technologies in the months ahead," Chopra said. "In the old days, an agency might have to adopt a commercial software package and spend $8 or $9 for every $1 spent on the actual license. Increasingly, new platforms are emerging based on the re-use of intellectual property."
There are plenty of obstacles that Chopra faces. The biggest one is changing the face of the entrenched bureaucracy dealing with technology procurement. Along with that are agencies that handle sensitive data that probably are unwilling to change at all to embrace 2.0.
"When you're talking about Federal government, IT systems have to be so powerful and reliable that a new player is going to have a hard time ramping up to this quickly," IDC Government Insights research director Shawn P. McCarthy told the Wall Street Journal.
