Contractors get Pentagon cyber intelligence
The Defense Department's computer networks now are under constant attack in what some have dubbed a "cyber war" with military computer systems, with even the software of our fighter jets threatened.
As the Pentagon considers creating a new cyber command--spending billions of dollars to defend its systems and build its offensive capabilities--it is relying heavily on contractors for a good deal of the secretive IT work. The National Journal reports that the Pentagon has decided to share classified intelligence about hackers and online threats with many of these military contractors.
The reason is simple and straightforward: Many of the contractor's computer systems contain sensitive and classified information found in the government's systems, and likely they are subject to attack and must be protected. It's a necessary step, but a very late one. It's also pretty surprising that the contractors--all with top security clearances--did not have access to this material in the past.
