In yet another last minute vote, Congress approved Dec. 21 a reauthorization of the America COMPETES Act, sanctioning $45 billion in spending on science research education over three years.

The final version, approved in the House by a vote of 228 to 130 generally along party lines, is the Senate text of the bill, which is less ambitious than the authorization bill first approved by the House in May. That bill would have authorized $85 billion in spending over five years--see table below for some major differences and how they affect federal agencies.

The Senate approved its version Dec. 17; the bill now requires only the signature of President Obama to become law.
