Congress adds millions for e-gov

In a remarkable shift in gears, Congress has finally opened the floodgates to fund the e-government fund for 2010. The House version includes $33 million and the Senate version includes $35 million, more funding for the fund than in the previous seven years combined, reports federalnewsradio.com.

Since 2002, Congress has allocated $25 million, which made it extremely difficult for agencies to carry out the e-gov mandate without borrowing money from other projects.

E-Gov, a project started by Mark Forman--OMB's associate director of IT and e-government during the Bush administration--intended to put government services online and make government transparent. His plan was hampered by tight budgets and the failure of the Bush administration to push for it.

But it's clear the Obama administration is taking a very different view of e-government, and sees it as part of the drive toward government transparency.
