Department of Commerce looking to Drupal, as well

Drupal is becoming very popular in the government. The Department of Commerce is planning to replace its current website with a large-scale, open-source, Drupal-based website hosting system.

In a request for information, the Commerce Department is asking vendors to submit information about the feasibility of the switch. The agency wants to know how Drupal can host multiple websites under different domain names, as well as under a single domain name.

Commerce is the latest agency to gravitate to Drupal. The White House website recently adopted Drupal. The system's founder, Dries Buytaert, was recently interviewed by FierceGovernmentIT, and talked about the flexibility of the product for the government sector.

"I believe Drupal's momentum in the government sector will continue because Drupal offers agencies an open technology platform that enables officials to engage with their constituents in an open, transparent manner," Buytaert said. "Drupal's flexibility and modularity results in the availability of thousands of plug-ins that enables organizations to build sites quickly, at lower cost than most other solutions."
