Blumenthal: EHR interoperability won't be easy
Adopting electronic health records and making them interoperable is not going to be easy, says health information technology czar David Blumenthal. In a recent conversation with FierceEMR, he said the United States at least has a unique advantage over earlier, European EHR efforts in that "we have the opportunity to build interoperability into the adoption process," rather than retrofit what's already in use.
Blumenthal also spoke about the difficulty of forming regulations around changing technology--one reason Congress has avoided putting a ceiling or deadline on the meaningful use rule, he said. "We can't tell you what you'll be capable of in 2018, and we certainly don't want to fix that in regulation, and place a ceiling on what you are capable of. We want you to adopt this technology and make the best of it, and change with it and grow with it," he said. Article
