Veterans Affairs Department Chief Information Officer Roger Baker spoke with reporters Oct. 26 about the department's monthly data breach report (.pdf). Scroll down to the media player to listen to the call in its entirety.

Most notably, the month of September saw the first incident of a stolen iPad; the department is among the first of major federal agencies to allow iPads onto its network, with somewhat less than 500 devices currently operating on it, Baker said.

"I swear these little buggers have legs," Baker said. The device was stolen from an office in metro Washington, D.C., before it was issued, meaning that there was no personally identifiable information in it, Baker said. It's unclear whether it was already registered to the network, but if so, the VA has ability to wipe the data remotely under a mobile device management function the VA is standing up, Baker said.

"Frankly, somebody has got themselves a brand new iPad 2 and there's not a lot we can do about it at this point," he added.
