Audio: VA CIO Roger Baker's January IT report
Veterans Affairs Department Chief Information Officer Roger Baker spoke with reporters Jan. 25 about the department's recent data breach reports to Congress. Scroll down to the media player to listen to the call in its entirety.
The first report (.pdf) discussed covered a reporting period from Oct. 31, 2011 to Dec. 4, 2011. Baker's data breach calls are typically held at the end of each month; however, December's call was pushed back due to the holidays. The second report (.pdf) covered a reporting period from Dec. 5, 2011 to Jan. 1, 2012.
Highlights of the report included large, "high-risk" data disclosure of personally-identifiable information due to a mis-fielded Freedom of Information Act Request submitted by Ancestry.com. Approximately 4,542 individuals were effected and VA is providing them with credit monitoring. A medium-risk vulnerability was revealed on a shared listserv utilized by VA Puget Sound researchers. As a result, 44 patients' names, Social Security numbers and personal health information were unsecured and VA has provided these individuals with credit monitoring services.
Baker also discussed mobility efforts underway at the agency.
