Audio: VA CIO Roger Baker's August IT report
Veterans Affairs Department Chief Information Officer Roger Baker spoke with reporters Aug. 30 about the department's monthly data breach report (.pdf). Scroll down to listen to a full recording of the call. The report covers data incidents from July 4 through July 31.
Among the items reported is that a daughter of a deceased veteran in the Midwest received discharge instructions of an unrelated veteran--and then informed the medical center that she would only return the documents if the VA was willing to forgive her father's medical bills and that she had contacted local news media about the data breach. As of Aug. 8, despite repeated attempts to reach the daughter, the documents had not been returned.
"It's not a typical thing," Baker said. The VA will not rescind the medical bills, he added.
