The Office and Management and Budget hosted a briefing--led by Federal Chief Performance Officer Jeff Zients and Federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra--April 27 at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C. to discuss efforts underway to transform government technology, cut waste and improve services to the public. The event served as something of an update on Kundra's 25-point plan for federal IT restructuring, which was announced Dec. 9, 2010.

According to Kundra seven of the 14 items due June 9 have been delivered, five are on track for completion at the 6-month mark, and two are behind schedule. Kundra said OMB is now working with Congress on improving the acquisition cycle and commoditizing IT in order to address the two points that remain a challenge. On April 12, Kundra indicated that he was disappointed in progress toward an agile IT budget process, while speaking before a congressional subcommittee.

Speakers at the April 27 event included:

  • Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman;
  • Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Kathleen Merrigan;
  • Veterans Affairs Department CIO Roger Baker; and
  • Homeland Security Department CIO Richard Spires.
