Agencies pursue customer-facing mobile apps under digital strategy


Federal agency leaders detailed their efforts to optimize at least two existing customer-facing services for mobile use during a Jan. 24 webinar on implementation of the Digital Government Strategy.

Pamela Wright, chief innovation officer at the National Archives and Records Administration, said NARA has developed an iPad app for teachers and students to access documents in NARA's archival holdings.

She recommended that agencies "leverage what you have" in the form of existing content and "keep it simple" in order to lower the barriers to participation.

Michael White, director of publications and services for NARA's Office of the Federal Register, said the office is concentrating on optimizing Federal Register 2.0, the web version of the daily launched in July 2010, rather than releasing an app, because "it already displays terrifically on an iPad or another tablet or even on a smartphone." 

Jill James, senior web editor and manager of the Education Department's, said her team plans to roll out a mobile design for the department's website.

Mike Pulsifer, lead information technology specialist at the Labor Department, says the department has a number of tools for the developer community that they are making available to the public to help them create mobile apps, although he said the site is not currently "mobile friendly."
